大 停 電 ﹐ 萬 聖 節 被 改 了 期

I must have jinxed myself by posting the last entry, for our house lost power shortly afterward!

真 倒 霉 ﹐ 發 出 了 上 一 個 貼 不 一 陣 ﹐ 家 內 便 停 了 電 ﹗

This snowfall came two days before Halloween, with leaves were still on the trees, the extra surface allowed more snow to accumulate on the branches, many of which had already been weakened by heavy rains over the summer and Hurricane Irene. As a result, hundreds of trees and uncounted numbers of branches fell, taking power lines down with them and leaving many of us without power, including all of our schools, and as a result the kids had no school for three days. Out of safety concern, our town asked everyone to trick-and-treat on Friday, Nov 4, instead of Monday, Oct 31.

這 場 雪 在 萬 聖 節 前 兩 天 來 臨 ﹐ 樹 葉 還 未 落 ﹐ 大 量 的 雪 積 聚 在 葉 上 ﹐ 樹 木 無 法 承 受 過 份 的 重 量 ﹐ 加 上 夏 天 兩 水 充 足 ﹐ 本 來 已 脆 弱 的 樹 干 更 加 脆 弱 ﹐ 倒 樹 把 電 線 帶 下 ﹐ 導 至 大 部 份 的 居 民 大 停 電 。 學 校 因 為 停 電 關 門 了 三 天 ﹐ 為 了 安 全 起 見 ﹐ 鎮 長 下 令 把 周 一 萬 聖 節 的 活 動 改 至 周 五 進 行 。

十 月 飛 霜

This rare October Nor'easter hit at least 10 states from North Carolina to Maine. The heavy wet snow falling on trees that haven't lost their leaves yet, and caused a lot of downed tree limbs, resulting in some widespread power outages.

It was a quite scary day, we kept hearing crackling sound and then followed by tree limbs landing sound. One landed on our street (in front of our next door neighbor's).

I hope no one was injured by the fallen trees!

天 氣 真 的 好 反 常 ﹐ 十 月 樹 葉 還 未 下 落 就 下 雪 ! 下 午 不 停 聽 到 樹 干 烈 的 聲 音 ﹐ 跟 著 就 聽 到 樹 干 下 跌 聲 ﹐ 我 們 多 擔 心 會 跌 在 住 屋 蓋 或 行 車 上 呢 ﹗ 希 過 沒 有 人 被 跌 樹 損 傷 吧 ﹗

Watkins Glen 紐 約 峽 谷 洲 立 公 園

Watkins Glen State Park is located 28 miles west of Cornell University, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, New York. Opened in 1863, the 776-acre park contains a spectacular gorge sculpted in slate, formed more than 12,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age and carved by the flow of Glen Creek ever since, and 19 separate waterfalls. After we left Cornell, we drove 1/2 hour to get there and spent the next 1.5 hour on the 1.5 mile long gorge trail with over 800 stone steps, going over and under waterfalls. After the whole week of hard work on packing and unpacking, this side trip was just what the doctor ordered!

送 罷 女 兒 上 學 ﹐ 我 們 駕 了 半 小 時 車 去 西 南 方 位 走 ( 28 公 哩 ) ﹐ 目 的 地 是 位 於 塞 尼 卡 湖 ( 美 國 五 指 湖 之 一 ) 南 端 的 Watkins Glen 紐 約 峽 谷 洲 立 公 園 。 我 們 沿 著 峽 谷 旁 的 小 徑 攀 登 ﹐ 那 小 徑 長 達 1.5 哩 長 ﹐ 有 著 800 多 石 級 及 19 道 瀑 布 之 多 。 峽 谷 是 在 一 萬 二 千 年 前 冰 河 末 期 時 開 始 形 成 的 。 雖 然 行 得 身 水 身 汗 ﹐ 這 個 小 旅 程 卻 是 化 解 我 們 多 日 來 為 女 兒 打 點 行 裝 積 下 的 疲 勞 之 靈 單 妙 藥 ﹗

Although I was aware that this year's Mid-Autumn Festival would be on Sept. 12, Monday, it did not occur to me that it's also time to stock up on Mooncake Cookies, these are baked cookies made with mooncake's crust dough! Thanks to my webpal who posted an article about the festival, I was then reminded after reading it.

入 學 日

As of Aug 19, 2011 (Fri), Daughter is officially a freshman at Cornell University.

2011 年 8 月 19 日 ( 周 五 ) 女 兒 正 式 成 為 康 乃 爾 大 學 的 " 新 鮮 人" (我 給 freshman 的 字 面 直 譯 ﹐ 即 大 學 第 一 年 級 學 生 ) .

We drove more than 3 hours to get there, then spent that entire day cleaning and unpacking. I was dead tired even before nightfall!

那 天 一 早 揸 了 三 小 時 多 車 扺 達 康 大 ﹐ 整 天 忙 得 不 得 了 ﹐ 晚 上 疲 勞 得 要 死 ﹗

第 四 天 免 費 假 期

Hubby has today and tomorrow off (planned), for lunch the two of us went out to a nearby restaurant (north-west of here) and to bring back an order for Son as he wanted to stay home. We couldn't believe the 15-min drive back turned into an hour long!

思 公 今 天 及 明 天 都 放 假 ﹐ 午 膳 我 們 二 人 去 了 一 間 位 於 我 家 西 北 方 向 的 餐 館 吃 。真 難 相 信 ﹐ 15 分 回 程 車 竟 要 用 上 一 小 時 ﹗

第 二 天 免 費 假 期

I have yet another free day off today, this is the 2nd day our company has to close due to flooding in the parking lot. My boss drove over there this morning and said it's still very much flooded. I'm crossing my fingers and toes that I'll get one more free day off tomorrow!

颶 風 艾 琳

I did not pay much attention to Irene's projected path because usually their prediction was off. When everyone at my office was all worried about it, I remained calm. It was not until late Thursday that I found out Hurricane Irene's eye would be passing Long Island, she was going to deliver a street-swamping blow to our entire area in the upcoming weekend, the governors of North Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey also declared states of emergency, and evacuation on low land residents were to begin as early as Friday. Holy mac, this was huge!

上 周 四 公 司 內 為 了 風 者 Irene 而 人 心 惶 惶 ﹐ 我 卻 因 沒 有 多 留 意 她 的 風 向 而 無 知 無 覺 ﹐ 也 是 靠 晚 才 知 道 她 將 直 接 吹 正 新 澤 西 洲 沿 海 區 及 紐 約 市 呢 ﹗ 各 洲 及 低 原 市 鎮 的 政 府 都 下 令 在 周 五 起 疏 散 居 民 ﹐ 真 的 是 大 件 事 ﹗

加 勒 比 海 渡 輪 遊 - 波 多 黎 各 聖 胡 安 市

Large cities usually do not have much appeal to us, fortunately San Juan has an older section filled with colonial style buildings and magnificent fortifications. Old San Juan was exactly where our cruise ship docked, so we spent few hours walking in this attractive neighborhood on our own.

最 後 一 天 陸 地 停 留 。 我 們 只 得 五 小 時 在 陸 地 走 動 ﹐ 聖 胡 安 市 除 了 歷 史 悠 久 的 舊 城 外 就 沒 有 甚 麼 地 方 吸 引 我 。 舊 城 面 積 不 大 ﹐ 船 又 是 泊 在 舊 城 港 口 內 ﹐ 故 沒 有 跟 團 的 必 要 。

加 勒 比 海 渡 輪 遊 - 聖 約 翰 島

July 26, 2011 (Tuesday) -- Day 6

2011 年 七 月 26 日 ( 二 ) -- 第 六 天

Having visited St. John even for a few hours, I now understand why my dental hygienist, Lisa, loves it so much and wishes to retire on this island. In fact she loves it so much that this has been her annual vacation retreat for the past decade.

雖 然 逗 留 在 聖 約 翰 島 只 得 那 幾 小 時 ﹐ 我 現 明 白 為 何 為 我 洗 牙 的 牙 醫 助 理 員 ﹐ Lisa ﹐ 情 有 獨 中 於 此 小 島 。 她 的 理 想 是 退 休 後 住 在 這 小 島 上 ﹔ 認 識 了 她 已 十 年 多 ﹐ 她 與 丈 夫 每 年 的 渡 假 都 是 在 這 個 島 中 渡 過 的 。

2011 年 七 月 25 日 ( 一 ) -- 第 五 天

After seeing the beautiful Bermuda, I was a bit disappointed with St. Maarten. It's just not as pretty, in fact some area was a bit run-down and with shabby houses. (I'm not a snob, but my expectation was raised after seeing Bermuda.) However, you can't tell from my pictures because our island tour only took us to see the beautiful spots.

去 完 美 得 令 人 心 醉 的 百 慕 達 後 ﹐ 滿 心 以 為 下 一 站 ﹐ 聖 馬 田 島 , 也 是 如 此 美 麗 的 。 我 失 望 了 ﹐ 事 實 上 這 個 海 島 有 些 區 域 的 屋 宇 是 頗 殘 舊 及 簡 陋 ﹔ 請 不 要 誤 會 ﹐ 我 不 是 一 個 鼻 子 長 在 額 上 的 人 ﹐ 只 是 百 慕 達 給 了 我 一 個 錯 角 ﹐ 以 為 所 有 加 勒 比 群 島 都 如 她 的 美 。 相 片 中 你 只 看 到 美 麗 的 一 面 ﹐ 那 是 因 為 環 島 團 只 帶 我 們 看 好 的 一 面 。

加 勒 比 海 渡 輪 遊 - 百 慕 達

July 23, 2011 (Saturday) -- Day 3

2011 年 七 月 23 日 ( 六 ) -- 第 三 天

Bermuda, one of the most beautiful places on earth, a product of nearly four centuries of British colonial history and an equally long reliance on American trade, with important cultural and social contributions from West Africa and Asia as well, was our first port of call on day 3 (July 23, 2011, Saturday) in our recent 9-day cruisetrip with Royal Caribbean. We joined an island tour which covered the entire length of the island.

2011 年 七 月 21 至 30 日

None of us are really fond with cruises, but we chose yet another cruise tour because Daughter wanted to have a graduation celebration with two of her best friends. A trip was in order, yet they were still too young to travel on their own. Cruising was a great way for them to be on their own yet still under our supervision. In fact we hardly saw them during the entire cruise except at dinner time.

我 們 對 郵 輪 渡 旅 是 沒 有 太 大 興 趣 ﹐ 但 女 兒 想 與 她 的 兩 位 好 同 學 慶 祝 高 中 畢 業 ﹐ 三 個 女 孩 子 一 起 去 旅 行 我 們 不 放 心 ﹐ 於 是 便 提 議 一 起 去 渡 輪 ﹐ 好 讓 她 們 有 自 己 的 空 間 ﹐ 但 又 在 我 們 的 管 轄 之 下 ﹔ 我 們 只 有 晚 上 用 膳 時 才 見 到 她 們 。

Thursday was a perfect day for rafting, sunny but not too hot (80F) and not humid at all. We did a 10-mile trip and spent about 5 hours on the water.

Just way too many natural disasters in our country this year!

今 年 冬 季 美 國 整 國 多 雪 ﹐ 春 季 多 雨 ﹐ 導 至 河 流 泛 濫 。 為 救 路 易 士 安 娜 洲 南 端 各 大 城 市 ﹐ 政 府 不 得 不 犧 牲 較 北 人 口 密 度 較 弱 的 效 區 ﹐ 打 開 堤 壩 ﹐ 把 水 引 走 。 昨 天 河 流 達 到 最 高 水 位 -- 58.5 呎 。
