We have a new puppy for few days, but can you believe we don't know if we have a female or male puppy?

這 幾 天 家 內 添 了 一 頭 新 狗 仔 ﹐ 但 你 相 信 今 天 的 我 原 來 是 不知 這 是 頭 狗 女 還 是 狗 仔 呢 ﹖

Yes, we did have a white Shih-Tzu, unfortunately we had to give her back to her ex-owner 4 weeks after she joined us. It's a long and complicated story, in short her ex-owner changed her mind, and I did not want to start a war with her so I returned the dog.

對 ﹐ 我 們 曾 經 收 養 了 一 頭 白 色 西 施 狗 ﹐ 但 很 可 惜 ﹐ 其 主 人 三 心 兩 意 ﹐ 一 個 很 復 雜 的 故 事 ﹐ 最 終 ﹐ 為 了 不 想 與 她 有 任 何 衝 突 ﹐ 我 很 偉 大 地 割 愛 把 狗 送 回 ﹔ 那 是 一 個 月 前 的 事 。

Needless to say, it broke my children's heart! not a day go by without them asking me if the owner had contacted me to offer the dog back to us.

不 用 說 我 雙 兒 女 傷 心 死 了 ﹗ 沒 有 一 天 他 們 不 問 我 狗 主 人 有 否 找 我 說 再 把 狗 兒 相 贈 。

Finally, this past Saturday, one month after we went dogless, we drove to Lancaster counter, PA (3 hours away) to find them a new Shuh-Tzu puppy; Lancaster is known to have good breeders.

上 周 六 我 們 舉 家 駛 三 小 時 車 去 鄰 洲 買 狗 仔 ﹐ 那 處 出 名 出 產 健 康 狗 仔 。

It was a rainny misty morning, but very warm (temperature in mid-60s). The PA countryside was absolutely breathtaking, I will post the pictures taken on the road in a seperate posting.

那 是 一 個 很 暖 的 下 雨 天 ﹐ 沿 途 風 景 一 絕 ﹐ 相 片 日 後 登 出 。

Our new puppy, Keri, or Kerry, came from an Amish farming farmily. I had never imagined I would ever deal with one face to face, will share that experience in a seperate posting.

我 們 的 新 狗 仔 ﹐ Keri 或 Kerry﹐ 來 自 一 個 阿 米 遜 農 業 家 庭 。 一 直 響 往 這 一 族 人 ﹐ 想 不 到 終 於 有 機 會 與 他 們 有 正 面 的 接 觸 ﹗

I had requested a light color female Shih-Tzu puppy, so Jake, the Breeder, brought out all the female puppies along with a couple of males for us to choose from. Only one 12-week female was in white/gold, but she did not appeal us; there was also a white male puppy who was very shy and kept to himself all the time. The rest were all 8 weeks old, few female Shih-Tzu and a couple of Shih-Pooh -- a cross between Shih-Tzu and Poodle.

我 原 意 是 要 一 頭 淺 白 色 的 西 施 狗 ﹐ 狗 主 Jake 放 了 幾 頭 狗 女 給 我 們 揀 ﹐ 也 有 兩 隻 狗 仔 ﹐ 有 兩 隻 是 混 種 狗 ﹐ 只 有 兩 隻 是 白 色 的 ﹐ 一 男 一 女 。 白 色 的 女 狗 不 討 人 愛 ﹐ 白 男 狗 則 很 怕 醜 ﹐ 獨 自 躲 左 一 角 ﹐ 沒 有 與 其 他 狗 仔 一 起 玩 耍 。

I first set my eyes on this female Shih-Pooh, whose brown furs reminded me of a Hershey chocolate bar.

起 初 我 是 喜 歡 這 頭 混 種 狗 ﹐ 因 為 被 她 的 朱 古 力 色 澤 吸 引 到 。

My daughter set eyes on this black/white female Shih-Tzu.

我 女 兒 則 鐘 情 於 這 頭 黑 默 默 的 西 施 狗 。

We spent as long as we needed to make our selection.

The Shih-Pooh which I like appeared to be way too active for our liking, the black/white one looked calm, but so was her sibling, a brown/white one.

大 約 半 個 鐘 後 ﹐ 察 覺 到 混 種 狗 太 過 活 躍 ﹐ 不 合 我 們 ﹔ 而 那 頭 黑 狗 太 黑 了 ﹐ 根 本 無 法 看 清 她 的 臉 。

There were so few lights inside Jake's house, the overcast sky made it even darker. I really couldn't tell the black/white's face, so finally I firmly told my daughter she could not have that puppy. Of course she argued with me and called me vain for I went for the look rather than inner beauty! I explained to her that a Shih-Tzu is known for their facial expressions and a set of intense eyes, but with the black fur hair, I could not tell what's on her face. I insisted her to shift ther focus to the other sibbling, a brown/white one.

外 面 陰 天 ﹐ 屋 內 又 因 燈 光 不 夠 所 以 非 常 的 暗 。 最 後 我 對 女 兒 說 她 不 能 要 那 頭 黑 狗 ﹐ 我 解 釋 給 她 知 西 施 狗 勝 在 有 一 副 非 常 多 表 情 的 面 孔 及 一 雙 水 汪 汪 的 眼 睛 ﹐ 那 黑 狗 太 黑 ﹐ 長 相 如 何 根 本 是 無 法 看 得 清 。 最 終 她 在 半 同 意 之 下 把 眼 光 集 中 在 黑 狗 的 棕 色 同 胞 妹 。

She took a considerate amount of time and finally accepted my proposal. If you believe in good omen, well, we got one, for as soon as the entire family agreed upon which puppy to take home, the sun broke thru and it brightened up the house!

當 我 們 全 家 同 意 把 棕 色 子 女 帶 回 家 時 ﹐ 陽 光 突 然 走 了 出 來 ﹐ 屋 內 光 猛 非 常 ﹗

We could have named our puppy SunShine, but we had already picked out a name for her: Keri.

若 果 我 們 未 揀 定 了 狗 名 ﹐ 肯 定 會 把 狗 兒 叫 作 "陽 光"﹐ 只 是 她 早 已 被 命 名 為 Keri.

So we became a proud owner of a 8+ weeks old female Shih-Tzu dog named Keri, or do we?

我 們 很 榮 幸 地 成 為 一 頭 八 個 星 期 大 的 女 西 施 狗 主 人 ﹐ 真 的 嗎 ﹖

Under the Puppy Lemon Law, we were to take our puppy to the vet to have her checked out, if any defects Jake would either exchange us with a different puppy or return our money in full. I'm sure our Keri is healthy, and her check-up will be later on today.

根 據 法 例 ﹐ 十 日 內 我 們 應 把 狗 帶 去 給 獸 醫 檢 驗 ﹐ 若 有 大 毛 病 可 退 狗 或 換 狗 的 ﹔ Keri 的 檢 查 將 是 今 天 旁 晚 。

There was a voice mail in our phone yesterday, but no one had time to retrieve it. When I woke up at 2am, I was so bothered by the answering machine's blinking alert light, so I listened to it. It was Jake, who apologized to me that there might be a confusion that we had took home a male puppy. There were four puppies in that litter and only one was a female. He still had that black/white female puppy, so he belived our Keri was a male. He offered to give us a female if we were not too attached to our dog yet. The vet paper that came with our dog had B/W as color, which could either be Black/White or Brown/White, he might have given us his black/white dog's paper by mistake!

昨 天 家 中 電 話 有 留 言 ﹐ 但 我 們 沒 有 時 間 查 聽 。 晚 上 兩 點 醒 時 忍 不 得 留 言 紅 燈 不 停 閃 著 ﹐ 便 聽 取 留 言 ﹐ 原 來 是 賣 狗 之 人 Jake. 他 留 了 一 個 長 言 ﹐ 抱 歉 地 說 他 可 能 弄 錯 了 ﹐ 現 在 不 肯 定 Keri 是 男 或 女 ﹐ 若 真 的 是 男 而 我 們 只 想 要 女 的 就 把 他 帶 回 換 取 吧 ﹗

Geez, how could I fall back to sleep after listening to such message? My mind was not on sending our Keri back for another Keri, but what would I name him if she turned out to be a boy! Yes, it's the name I was hung up with.

思 緒 給 這 個 留 意 打 亂 了 ﹐ 幸 好 過 不 多 久 我 能 重 回 夢 鄉 ﹗ 男 或 女 已 不 再 重 要 了 ﹐ Keri 肯 定 是 我 們 的 ﹔ 只 是 ﹐ 若 是 男 仔 則 要 給 他 起 過 一 名 字 啊 ﹗

The vet would give us the answer we need today, but I need to update the name right away so the record would be correct; afterall, Keri will need to have annual shots done by this same vet! Would Keri be confused if we switch her (or he) to a different name?

我 想 ﹐ 明 天 獸 醫 可 講 給 我 們 知 真 相 ﹐ 但 同 時 我 要 取 定 好 一 個 名 ﹐ 獸 醫 的 記 錄 檔 案 要 正 確 嘛 ﹗

After so many thoughts, I decided to change her name to Kerry if she's actually a boy dog, afterall, both sound just the same!

今 天 想 好 了 ﹐ 若 是 男 仔 的 話 就 叫 他 為 Kerry 吧 ﹐ 兩 者 都 同 音 ﹐ 不 用 重 新 教 狗 仔 另 個 名 字 ﹗
